Choosing the Right Diesel Generator
List all the equipment that must run at the same time and its running power. Motors, pumps and compressors draw extra power when they start, so they need more capacity than their running figure suggests. Allow headroom for equipment you may add later. Our generator sizing calculator gives an estimate for starting up to three motors (DOL or star delta), and our team will confirm the size before you buy.
Single phase suits most homes, small businesses and off-grid solar systems. Three phase is used on commercial and industrial sites and for larger motors. Most of our range is three phase, with single phase models also available.
- Open sets suit installation in a plant room or purpose-built enclosure.
- Enclosed (sound attenuated) sets have a heavy-duty anti-corrosive canopy, anti-vibration pads, lockable doors and an emergency stop, so they suit outdoor sites and anywhere noise matters.
- Containerised generators are heavy-duty Perkins and Cummins powered sets for mining and construction.
Fuel Use and Running Costs
Fuel is usually the biggest running cost, and fuel consumption rises with load. Compare the total cost of ownership (price, fuel, servicing and parts), not just the upfront cost. Ways to reduce fuel use, run more efficiently and extend run time:
- Fully bunded 24-hour base-mounted tanks, or separate bunded fuel tanks from 500 L to 100,000 L.
- Several synchronised generators sharing the load, as we did with four JCB generators supplying 2,000 kVA of prime power at a grain export facility.
- Hybrid generators that pair a Yanmar-powered diesel engine with lithium batteries for remote sites.
Installation and Automatic Transfer Switches
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) starts the generator when mains power fails, moves your load across, then switches back when mains power returns. We supply single phase and three phase transfer switches, and our team handles installation, commissioning and load bank testing. Installations are carried out and tested to AS/NZS 3000:2018 (the Wiring Rules) and AS/NZS 3010:2017 (electrical installation of generating sets), and our quality management follows ISO 9001.
For complex sites, our engineered power solutions are tailored to your requirements, with options including mains synchronising, parallel sets, peak lopping, demand response, custom control panels, extra silencing and high-temperature cooling.
Generators for Every Application
We supply reliable prime and standby power for mine sites and camps, construction sites, farms and agriculture, and hospitals and healthcare. Projects include a 500 kVA generator for a private hospital in NSW and a containerised Cummins generator for the Port Lincoln water treatment plant. For residential and off-grid solar backup, see our Kubota-powered home standby generators.
Servicing, Parts and Cross Hire
Since 2008, PR Power has supplied the construction, rental and mining industries. Our experienced team provides onsite and in-house servicing, repairs, overhauls and service contracts (book a generator service), and we stock over 4,000 genuine generator parts for delivery Australia-wide. Our 15 service technicians cover the country: five in Western Australia, five across Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, and five across Queensland, New South Wales, the ACT and the Northern Territory.
Rental companies can cross hire our diesel generators, fuel tanks and load banks to add to their fleet.

Standby is the higher rating and applies when the generator backs up mains power during an outage. Prime is the rating to use when the generator is your main power source, running for long hours at a changing load. Each generator in our range lists both ratings.
kVA is apparent power and kW is real power. A diesel generator usually has a power factor of 0.8, so a 100 kVA generator delivers about 80 kW. Size against the kW your equipment uses.
Yes. With an automatic transfer switch (ATS), the generator starts when mains power fails and switches your load over. We supply single and three phase transfer switches. The connection must be made by a licensed electrician.
Lead times depend on the model size, configuration and current stock across our branches. Generators under 500 kVA that are in stock are typically ready in 1–2 weeks, depending on any upgrades added. Generators of 500 kVA and above can take longer. Call 1300 399 499 to check current stock.
Home standby generators are listed with a price including GST, with shipping quoted separately. Larger generators are set up for each application, so we quote them to your requirements. Call 1300 399 499 or add a generator to your quote list.
